World Wildlife Library of Pheromones and Semiochemicals

From problem to solution

The WWLPS works in cooperation with the teams in charge of the animals. When a need arises, WWLPS responds immediately thanks to its team’s specialists. The first step of the process is understanding the need, the causes of the problem and identifying the pheromone or semiochemical which could be used to satisfy the need. Fear reactions are some of the common problems faced by zoos.

The aim of the WWLPS programs is to deliver a solution tailor made for each situation. Thanks to the cooperation between the IRSEA and Ceva Animal Health, the products proposed for the management of the wild animals are high quality products, from a technical and biological point of view.

The products are individually developed for the target species: here, a tiger treated with allomarking pheromones to prevent fights.

From sampling to chemical analysis

The WWLPS has the ability to analyse native secretions and to produce their synthetic analogues.
In many cases, it is necessary to produce a specific pheromone. In such cases, it is crucial to obtain high quality samples which will be analysed by the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department of the IRSEA.

Thanks to the funding provided by Ceva Animal Health, we are able to use the most sophisticated Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrum (GC-MS) methods with a double GC machine which provides useful information about complex groups of odorous compounds.

From analysis to synthetic pheromone or semiochemical

The GC-MS analysis provides chromatographs showing the different compounds present in the sample.

GC-MS

Thanks to the methods developed by the IRSEA, the putative pheromone is identified and a synthetic product is prepared in order to be used in the target species.
